# Definition

**Scientific Notation** is a way of effeciently representing very large quantities or very small quantities. The standard form of a scientific number is,

\begin{align} a \times 10^n \hskip .5in 1\leq a < 10 \hskip .5in n\mbox{ an integer} \end{align}

- $123,000,000,000,000=1.23 \times 10^{14}$
- $0.000000085=8.5 \times 10^{-8}$
